I was so excited to read this book, as Zoella from YouTube put it in her bookclub so I figured it had to be good. And it was, kind of. Overall I liked it; the story was nice, the characters were well developed and the world was cool and thought out. But in the end I just was just missing some kind of wow-factor. Something to make me love this book instead of just thinking it was okay. I don't want to give too much away, but for me, the looking for ingredients took too long and it got a little boring. I was waiting for something exciting to happen but the story just went exactly the way I expected it to without any surprises. The idea for this book is super good and I did like it altogether, but I just think it could have been better. Samantha was a very lovely character and I liked her and her friend Anita a lot. The way Evelyn's love for herself is described was also funny. It's a nice and easy read, so if you're looking for that then I'd recommend it, but if you're looking for your next favourite book, probably not. My first book haul! From the library, that is; I can't afford to buy all my books.. ANOTHER DAY - DAVID LEVITHAN SYNOPSIS: Every day is the same for Rhiannon. She has accepted her life, convinced herself that she deserves her distant, temperamental boyfriend, Justin, even established guidelines by which to live: Don’t be too needy. Avoid upsetting him. Never get your hopes up. Until the morning everything changes. Justin seems to see her, to want to be with her for the first time, and they share a perfect day—a perfect day Justin doesn’t remember the next morning. Confused, depressed, and desperate for another day as great as that one, Rhiannon starts questioning everything. Then, one day, a stranger tells her that the Justin she spent that day with, the one who made her feel like a real person…wasn’t Justin at all. I'm super excited to read this! Even though I only just realised that it's a companion novel and I haven't read the original.. Oops. From what I have read it can probably be read without reading Every Day first. David Levithan is honestly one of my favourite authors so I'm looking forward to reading this! I WAS HERE - GAYLE FORMAN SYNOPSIS: When her best friend Meg drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, who broke Meg’s heart. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question. I read If I Stay by the same author and I just connected so much with the characters so I have high expectations for I Was Here as well. The story sounds really interesting and I've been wanting to read more ' basic drama stuff' instead of all the scifi and fantasy that I usually read! THE POTION DIARIES - AMY ALWARD SYNOPSIS: When the Princess of Nova accidentally poisons herself with a love potion meant for her crush, she falls crown-over-heels in love with her own reflection. Oops. A nationwide hunt is called to find the cure, with competitors travelling the world for the rarest ingredients, deep in magical forests and frozen tundras, facing death at every turn. But can Sam really compete with the dazzling powers of the ZoroAster megapharma company? Just how close is Sam willing to get to Zain Aster, her dashing former classmate and enemy, in the meantime? I know, I know. I just said I want to read more ' basic drama stuff', but that doesn't mean I'm going to read less scifi and fantasy too! I wanted to read this as it's a part of Zoe's book club (Zoe as in Zoella from YouTube) and I have already read some other books from her list and liked them, so I figured she has a good taste in books and I should read some more of her recommendations! Let me know if you've read any of these books and what you thought of them! :) SYNOPSIS: A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs. A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows. Rating: 4/5
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is one of the books I've recommended to many people over the years, and every time it's hard to explain what it's about without sounding insane. "So get this: children with special powers, supervised by their headmistress who's also a bird, stay in a loop of reliving the same day over and over again to protect themselves from scary monsters." I promise it's less weird than it sounds! Or maybe not, but it just makes more sense when you actually read it. I loved this book! It's so different from anything else I've ever read and had me on the edge of my seat. I love the concept and how well thought out the whole world is. The characters are lovable and good, although I did find myself checking in the front of the book who was who quite often, as I was trying to remember not only their names, but also their peculiarities. Fortunately the book comes with a handy guide (with pictures!!) to the characters which you can always refer back to. And the pictures. The pictures! Riggs collects these old pictures from wherever he can find them and wrote the story around real pictures he's gathered, which gives the story just that bit more and it's so awesome! I would really really recommend this book to pretty much everyone! It's not that scary, but it is suspenseful at times. It's easy to get lost in the story and (accidentally) read the whole thing in one sitting!
