SYNOPSIS: My name is Tess Turner - at least, that's what I've always been told. I have a voice but it isn't mine. It used to say things so I'd fit in, to please my parents, to please my teachers. It used to tell the universe I was something I wasn't. It lied. It never occurred to me that everyone else was lying too. But the words that really hurt weren't the lies: it was six hundred and seventeen words of truth that turned my world upside down. Words scare me, the lies and the truth, so I decided to stop using them. I am Pluto. Silent. Inaccessible. Billions of miles away from everything I thought I knew. Tessie-T has never really felt she fitted in and after what she read that night on her father's blog she knows for certain that she never will. How she deals with her discovery makes an entirely riveting, heart-breaking story told through Tess's eyes as she tries to find her place in the world. Rating: 4/5
First of all: the cover is prettier in real life. It has orange borders around it and the blue is a much brighter. I picked this book up because I loved the cover and its colours so much. The book itself turned out to be totally worth it though! I loved that Tess was not the stereotypical skinny, pretty girl who doesn't think she's pretty like way too many YA main characters are. Tess is fat and she does not despise it. "I am big and I am strong and I am powerful - a girl of Everest proportions who won't easily be conquered." I love this quote so much. Even though throughout the book classmates make fun of how Tess looks, she never lets it get her down. She blames their harsh words on them, not on her body. I do have to say that sometimes Tess's behaviour annoyed me to no end. She was a bit naive at times and did risky things that made me roll my eyes. Her silence had bad consequences that could've been prevented from happening if she'd just opened her mouth. But she does speak up at the right time and I think the whole book would've been much less powerful if she'd broken her silence earlier. This book was an emotional rollercoaster and I went from rooting for characters to despising them within mere pages and in the end I just wanted Tess to be okay more than anything. The plot was a whirlwind of emotions and everything just kept rolling and happening, so the reader never has to get bored. I would totally recommend this book to everyone! It's a fairly thoughtful book and thus not a simple and breezy read. But it is completely worth it! SYNOPSIS: After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her ... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined. Rating: 5/5
Wow, I LOVED this!! Throne of Glass is a super thrilling and exciting story and I was so into it that I got annoyed with myself for being hungry and having to get up to eat because that meant I had to stop reading. It started as a nice action novel, but as it went on more and more mysteries were introduced that kept calling me back to the story and gripping my attention. I was a bit disappointed that not all mysteries were solved at the end of the book, but I suppose there's a whole series of books to follow that will hopefully answer all of my questions! I loved Caelena, as she was super fierce and awesome but also had feelings and depth to her character. Also, she was described as being sickly thin and she gained weight throughout the story! Being very thin was not seen as ideal! Fantastic! I'm generally not a fan of love triangles and relationships where the boy is way too old for the girl, so if you've read Throne Of Glass you can guess which couple I'm rooting for. I liked Chaol more as a character than Dorian, but Chaol is just too old for Caelena so they'd be better off as friends. Nehemia was also an excellent character, as she showed that you don't just need one good female character to make a book nice and diverse; women are just as much capable of taking on ANY role in a book a man could, and Nehemia was the awesome sidekick whom I hope to see lots of in the rest of the series. The story itself was thrilling and gripping and kept me on the edge of my seat, which I suppose I could've expected from a book with a character called "Eye Eater". Seriously, this book is not for the weak of heart as it has some gruesome descriptions of murders and does not shy away from the gross and scary. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is of an appropriate age (I don't think this book fits a younger Young Adult audience) and likes Fantasy! Definitely let me know if you've read this book and what you thought of it! Did you love it as much as I did? I honestly didn't expect to like this as much as I did. This book wasn't great, but it was an easy and entertaining read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I started out eye-rolling at America quite a bit because she is the typical red haired protagonist who doesn't think she is pretty but is clearly blessed with supermodel looks. This quickly improved though and I started liking America. She is made to be liked by everyone, by being 'different' and a bit of an outsider by wanting to wear pants and not falling head over heels for the prince like all the other girls. I wasn't too annoyed by this though, because even though I was aware it was happening, I liked her anyway. I feel like the plot of this series is really stretched out over all three of the books, because this first book didn't really have a typical plot structure, as in peace-events-peace, but it feels like it's still in the uprising to the climax when it ends. This is fine by me, but it does mean I need to read the next two books ASAP! I'm really looking forward to reading them because even though I'm pretty sure I can quite accurately predict the outcome of this story I still enjoy reading it a lot. I liked that although America is set up to be a clear favourite, we still get to read about the other girls a bit as well and I love Marlee and Kriss. Of course I hate Celeste, as she is made to be the Stereotypical Mean Girl, but once again, I don't mind this set-up. This book can get away with using stereotypical characters: it just works. Maxon's character is also quite stereotypical but I like him nonetheless. I'd recommend this book to people looking for a quick and fun read, but if you're looking for a proper good book, I'd recommend you look elsewhere. This book really is just simple entertainment. The GONE series by Michael Grant has got to be one of my favourite series, so what better way to start off this blog than by reviewing it? I read the first book of this series way back in 2014 and was immediately captivated by it. It is action-packed and with a lot of characters there is a possible favourite for everyone! I loved how real the characters felt and how they were fleshed out as the books progressed. Despite the obvious impossibility of the story, it still felt realistic. If we forget all the superpowers and the entire dome itself, it's written quite realistically. If a scenario like this did take place, it seems likely that this would be how things happened. I did come to dislike the main character, Sam, but some other characters totally made up for that as I loved Edilio, Dekka and Astrid a lot! The book is also quite diverse with a wide range of characters from different ethnicities and sexualities. I liked some of the books of this series more than others, but that is to be expected from a long book series. The first one and the last one were definitely brilliant and I read the last one in one sitting despite the fact that it's over 400 pages. I would definitely recommend this series a lot! It can be a little scary or graphic at times, so don't read it if you're a bit squeamish, but if you can handle a little creepiness then definitely read the GONE series!
