SYNOPSIS: Three teenagers are going on the trip of a lifetime. Only one is coming back. It's been more than forty years since NASA sent the first men to the moon, and to grab some much-needed funding and attention, they decide to launch an historic international lottery in which three lucky teenagers can win a week-long trip to moon base DARLAH 2. Rating: 5/5
If you've read my reviews before, you'll know that I rarely give books a 5 star rating, so this really is a special one to me. This book was a true game changer. Before it, I didn't think books could scare you the way a horror movie can, but I learnt that they definitely can. 172 Hours on the Moon is so thrilling and scary that I got goosebumps multiple times. I kept skipping ahead and having to call myself back because I was just so anxious to find out what would happen next. This book brilliantly weaved in the WOW-signal, which is the only 'message' we've ever received from space. The code for it is 6EQUJ5 and the characters keep seeing parts of it throughout their journey. That should tell them that this whole going to the moon thing might not be a good idea. Also the elderly man who was involved with the moonlanding in 1969 who's desperately trying to keep people from going there again. Everything is telling these people not to go to the moon, but they go anyway. If there's so many things screaming at you not to go, there can only be something horrific waiting for you there. And there is. Of the three main characters, it is clear that we are supposed to favour Mia, as she becomes the most important one. This was the only disappointing part of this book, as I would've liked to get to know the other two, Antoine and Midori, a bit better. The storyline makes up for this 100% though, as I didn't even have time to care about in-depth character development. I was just so into this story. I realise that this review has read like more of an advertisement than a review, but that's because I just love this book so much! If you like scary things, you will love this book. I promise.
