SYNOPSIS: A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs. A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows. Rating: 4/5
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is one of the books I've recommended to many people over the years, and every time it's hard to explain what it's about without sounding insane. "So get this: children with special powers, supervised by their headmistress who's also a bird, stay in a loop of reliving the same day over and over again to protect themselves from scary monsters." I promise it's less weird than it sounds! Or maybe not, but it just makes more sense when you actually read it. I loved this book! It's so different from anything else I've ever read and had me on the edge of my seat. I love the concept and how well thought out the whole world is. The characters are lovable and good, although I did find myself checking in the front of the book who was who quite often, as I was trying to remember not only their names, but also their peculiarities. Fortunately the book comes with a handy guide (with pictures!!) to the characters which you can always refer back to. And the pictures. The pictures! Riggs collects these old pictures from wherever he can find them and wrote the story around real pictures he's gathered, which gives the story just that bit more and it's so awesome! I would really really recommend this book to pretty much everyone! It's not that scary, but it is suspenseful at times. It's easy to get lost in the story and (accidentally) read the whole thing in one sitting!
